Finally on our way! (By Simon)

After months of planning and preparation we finally left home at 6:30am on Monday the 30th of March 2015. The first 2 days were long days driving: The first up the Sunraysia Highway to Mildura and then along the Sturt Highway, passing into South Australia, to Barmera. Along the way we passed through many small farming towns which seemed to be "ghost towns" reminding us of Radiator Springs (from the Cars movie) and saw Emu's, Kangaroo's and amazing "willy willies"... see below:

Our first camp spot at Barmera was an amazing free camp right on the lake. Kids went for a swim, made pizza for dinner, short walk and then into bed.

The second day we left at about 8:30am heading for Streaky Bay. We passed through an amazing variety of country from dry desert to wheat farms stretching as far as the eye can see! We had lunch at the beautiful little town of Crystal Brook and onto Streaky Bay. We passed through Kimba whose claim to fame is that it is half way across Australia (as the crow flies) which is a bit misleading for those travelling by road!!

We finally reached Streaky Bay at about 6:00pm. Great caravan park with a site right on the beach.

Car and van are going great, and conditions have been fantastic with blue skies, sunshine and not a breath of wind (hope that continues as we cross the Nullarbor).

Seems like we have joined the ranks of the "Grey Nomads" who are travelling around Australia... we can't believe how many caravans are on the road. It is great to meet up at the end of the day and share travelling stories and hear where they are from and where they are going... very friendly folk!

Travel Log:
- Home to Barmera: 722km
